Stopklatka.pl today has an interview with Václav Jiráček, the star of Agniezska Holland’s upcoming release Jánošík, The True Story.
To catch you up, the title figure of the story is one Juraj Jánošík, an 18th-century figure often likened to Robin Hood by journalists looking for a handy comparison to somebody western audiences have heard of. So there.
Like I wrote last year, about half of Holland’s film was shot when the production ran into financial trouble and everything ground to a halt. Five years later, Dariusz Jablonski of Apple Film Production stepped in and Holland was able to resume filming. In Gdynia last year, the director told me that she was very anxious about whether the actors would still fit into their costumes after five years.
Holland, of course, is the hardest-working woman in European film. Scarcely a month goes by that she isn’t attached to one project or another — most recently a EUR 6m Czech adaptation of Karel Čapek’s War With The Newts. She also did three episodes of The Wire. Just how similar are the Tatras to West Baltimore. You’ll have to wait until at least September, when the film is released in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia.
